Zanskar – Adventure and blue skies

Situated south of Ladakh district and surrounded by high mountains, Zanskar remains inaccessible for most of the part of the year; reason being its tricky geographical locations. Zankar has kept alive the ancient form of Tibetan buddhism which flourishes in the monasteries neatly tucked away in the Zanskar valley.
Zanskar River flows from Padum to Zangla cutting a series of gorges through the Zanskar Range. It joins the Indus after a voyage across 300 km of mountains and ridges. The Valley of Zanskar is renowned for its gompas and nice friendly people. Zanskar is created as two subsidiaries namely Stod and Linak merge at the foot of Padum; Padum being the important habitation of that area. Karsha near Padum is the largest Gompa of that region. There are quiet a few other monasteries which are worth a visit once you visit Zanskar. The best time to visit Zanskar would be between the months of June to September. A few of its Adventure trek routes have been discussed in detail below.
Major trekking routes in Zanskar regionPadum

Padum is well-known as a key trekking point and a well-liked traveler hot spot. Padum (3505 m) was once the capital of the olden empire of Zanskar. It is the current day governmental head office of the province. Otherwise a barely populated vale, Padum can be portrayed as the most densely inhabited setup of Zanskar. By the way, it is only in Padum that there is a population of Muslims comprising practically half the township's populace, its beginning in the vicinity dating from mid 17th century. Recently, Padum has turned out to be a famed trekking base and a popular tourist destination. On the way quite a few places of visitor interest in the neighborhood of the township can be visited in the course of pleasurable hikes.
Kargil to Padum
When all suspension bridges are open the path is available from early June to late October. On the last day's hike from Phe to Padum you traverse the river and bypass the Sani gompa, one of the most imperative in Zanskar.Padum to Lamayuru
There is another course from Padum that commences from the other side of the Zanskar River. It takes you to Linghsot Gompa before following the first route.

Padum to Kishtwar
On this trek you have to make use of porters and not horses. The last few days are hard work with many climbs and drops but the way from Kishtwar by now stretching to Galar is steadily being extended.
Stongdey
The Stongdey monastery is 18 km from Padum, on the way to Zangla. An ancient establis
hment linked with the Tibetan yogi, Marpa, Stongdey is at present the second largest monastic organization of Zanskar, occupied by the resident community of about 60 Gelukpa monks. The great white-washed complex has a quantity of temples, each a warehouse of the region's rich monastic legacy. Stongdey can be arrived at in about 4 hours by road on foot. The ascent up to the monastery is rather exhausting but it is worth the trouble for the magnificent landscape of the gorge seen from here.
Zangla
Lying in the northern side of Zanskar at the end of the 35 km long road from Padum an old castle is in ruins except for a small chapel which occupies a hill that overlooks the deserted valley below. Just close to that is the old nunnery which is worth paying a visit for the austere life style of the small monastic community of nuns. An old monastery located in the close by village of Tsa-zar has lovely murals.
Zangla is also a starting point for the Padum-Markha valley treks. Mid-way Zangla and Stongdey, the villages lie mid-way. Zangla is a connecting point on the well-known Padum-Strongdey-Zangla-Karsha-Padum route, where you get to see most of Zanskar’s rich heritage. The river has a provisional foot-bridge built across for going to the left bank along which the trail to Karsha follows.
Darcha – Lamayuru Trek
Imagine rigorous hardships, 14 to 20 km of strenuous and superb sights every day for 3 weeks. This trek starts at the Western Himalayas footpath connecting Darcha in Lahoul with Padum in Zanskar and Lamayuru in Ladakh. On the way you will check out various monasteries starting with Phuktal monastery which is built under a huge cave, Sani gompa, Mani gompa, Burdan gompa, Karsha gompa, Lingshed gompa and Lamayuru gompa. At 5100 meters the path crosses several passes Shingo la 5100 metres, Perfi la, Hunuma la 4800 metres, Sengge la 5060 metres, Sirsir la and Prinkiti la. The route passes by the rivers of Tsarap, Chandra, Bhaga, Doda, Indus and Zanskar.

Zanskar is home to some of the finest treks on this planet. The remote location of this place provides spine chilling adventure to the visitors here. Visit to the monasteries here is a humbling experience. The simple people of Zanskar look like they belong to a forgotten land. When you trek through deep gorges or cycle down the passes and when you cannot stop gazing at God’s creations you know you have achieved what most come here seeking for – peace and bliss.

School Kids and Adventure

Schools can be demanding; even stressful. But do teachers take notice? Even parents pressurize their children to work harder than usual and the consequences are that quiet a few at a very early age have spectacles or suffer from depression. And that is the case with most of the kids these days.
You may ask does life revolve at books, home work and tuitions? No, there is a
dventure, its thrill and the freshness it spreads. There are several Adventure Tourism companies that bring this newness in the life of school kids. Seasonal adventure camps or day picnics are organized by them. These camps are filled with several activities.

If the adventure camp is organized in a hilly region it might have rock climbing, rappelling and Trekking as the major activities. If the camp is at a sea side then there chances you might get to try out water sports; Scuba Diving, snorkeling, motor boats, Kayaks and what not. If your school has organized your camp near snow clad mountain tops you might as well ski a little. Yes there is no dearth of adventure activities and organizations who have taken to organizing adventure camps for school kids.
Generally adventure camps are designed for the tough and experienced. But adventure tourism companies these days are made for the kids keeping their temperament in mind. When I say this, it means kids state of mind is kept in mind while organizing such tours. Expect some talk sessions with kids, meals together with kids, games that get them cracking up with laughter or even normal interactions which boosts their self esteem of the kids.

Not only are these adventure camps good as outings but they also serve several other purposes. If you are a teacher and knowing your students is an extremely important part of teaching them then adventure tours are the best place to discover them. If you’re a parent and see your kid drag his 5 kilo backpack to and fro school everyday and are worried about him, it is time you send him to an adventure camp. Because when he meets the same old friends and new ones in a surrounding different from the usual one, when he gets a chance to test his own skills and when he is able to let himself loose because there are no pressures of course work or examinations he will definitely bloom and become a confident person.

These adventure activities instill in kids a sense of responsibility. They also empower them and make them confident. Don’t be surprised if I say these adventure activities help kids become smarter. They take the hardships, become stronger. They perform tasks, sit around with friends and teachers and learn to open. Interactions in free surroundings really help children de stress them.
It is very important for schools to organize such tours from time to time that involve activities other than school work. It is equally important that kids show equal interest in extra curricular activities. For if it is not now in the prime of life that they see nature from its closest, they will probably be too old to realize the importance of it later on.

The sand dune and the quaint desert habitat beckon the explorer in you.

Adventure sports - Playground of bold and beautiful

Women have made it their business to break the barriers and make their marks in places you would least expect them to; adventure sports being one among them. Starting in 1975 when Junko Tabei became the first women to climb the Everest to Jessica Crisp who went on to become multiple World Champion in Windsurfing, women are giving a tough competition to their male
counterparts.
Although women have taken to adventure sports since its inception it is sad to note that they have not been recognized for their participations. Speculations about whether a woman can take physical strain or not have been going on for a long time now. But the debate is being questioned
severely as more and more women are seen indulging in extreme sports.
Be it Niki Gudex, a pro snowboarder or Lynn Hill an ace rock climber. There is no denying that women like in every other domain of their life are becoming known for pushing their limits and taking on themselves some self – directed action.
As much there is a need to clear the myth about women being able to do well
in Adventure Sports there is also a dire need educate the masses about the accessibility of adventure sports. Adventure sports are not just for the tough ones. They are for everyone. They are so varied in their style that anyone who has the faintest of the idea about adventure can give it a try.
If I say adventure sports and you think of climbing the steepest hill on the planet, or spending days alone in Antarctica, you may also see that although these extreme sports sum up the essence of adventure they are not the only ones. There are several other sports which do not require extreme training, neither great fitness levels. Paragliding, parasailing, hot-air
ballooning, Scuba Diving and snorkeling are to

name a few.
The misconceptions that adventure sports create in everyone’s mind can be challenged when you try out some of these sports. You would discover how all of these have a charm of their own. They all are addictive and so fun-filled that you would prefer adventure breaks to any other. The best about these sports is that they are more of a recreational activity, more for instant fun and thrill rather than something that has a long set of pre-requisites.
You may ask what pre-requisites I speak of here. Seasoned adventurers believe in constant practice and thorough training. For them climbing a mountain peak or swimming an ocean is serious business and probably the only task at hand for the time being. Hence being well toned and masculine becomes a priority for them. The dedication of these seasoned adventurers however should not stop us from trying out different activities. As said before adventure sports are many, not all require the participant to be perfect and fit.

In fact what you can try out is to indulge in the fun activities and gradually proceed onto the tougher more challenging tasks. It may take time but don’t you worry people, if you have the will to move ahead, there is no stopping you.

Paragliding – Soar like an eagle

The earliest history of paragliding dates back to the 60’s when an aeronautical engineer developed a wing called Sailwing. The Sailwing apart from having 5 distinct lobes and a series of long thin keels attached to the rear lines also featured closed cells, a wing profile, rip-stop nylon sail, 8 meter lines and high aspect ratio which was common with the 21st century paragliders.

In the 1970’s there was another paraglide pilot by the name of Dieter Strasilla. 1978 finally saw the beginning of modern paragliding. AndrĂ© Bohn was the first person to have launched from Mieussy in the northern French Alps and glided all the way down to the football pitch in the valley 1000 meters below.
Somewhere around 1985 when hang-glider pilots discovered paragliding, they embraced these flights as they worked out cheaper and convenient. As time passed people replaced flying sports chute from a foot launcher as 'real' Para gliders had emerged and the sport was blossoming in Europe.
It is 2009 and we are really in the Golden Age of technical paraglider development. The best part about paragliding is that paragliding is fun.

Although it has an element of danger and risk it is reduced to an acceptable minimum through effective and controlled training. Paragliding is one of the least expensive ways of getting into thin air.
Paragliding can also be carried out over water, with the use of a speed boat . Some additional minor items of equipment are required and somewhat different techniques are involved. Ascents usually involve long low-level flights, and it is often possible to be towed away from the wind line and round in complete circles.
This sport has some hidden advantages as well. It provides an opportunity to everyone involved in developing both teamwork and independence, leading to an acceptance of responsibility and improving decision making.
The best part about this Adventure Sport is that no special skills are needed for the beginners to taste the adventure and it is equally available to the disabled. It is the best way to experience thrill and pleasure mankind could only desire for.

Having a healthy break

Are you the kind who is running around the clock, trying to balance things at home and work? Do you constantly live under work pressure? Do you have odd eating hours and haphazard eating habit? If you have answered yes to most of the questions then you are in dire need of a break, a healthy break.
Below are mentioned a few things people can do who spend half of their waking life at work. Try these and you will see changes in your approach towards work.
Meditate
The best way to wrap up a hectic day is by meditating. Meditation helps you look inward, be calm and ultimately get rid of negativism. A person who constantly lives on the edge would understand the importance of having a clear mind. Meditation helps bring this clarity. It is also important to realize that thoughts have a direct effect on our physical body. Hence being mentally relaxed is very important and should be made a top priority.
Meditation becomes better when you are closer to nature. So when you feel y
our mind needs a break opt for a meditation center. Rishikesh and Kerala offer lots of meditation opportunities. The centers here run Yog and Meditation courses which can work wonders for your well being.
Challenge yourself
Adventure has a magical quality. It brings out that part of your personality which is subdued when you are busy meeting deadlines at work. It freshens up the head, helps you shift focus from the everyday idiosyncrasies. So grab the first opportunity and go rock climbing, take day trips around the city or arrange for a jeep safari trip to Leh – Ladakh. Do something wild; push yourself to limits which you yourself were not aware could achieve. And when you have cleared one hurdle after another there is a sense of accomplishment which lifts your mood and does wonders for your self esteem.

The after effects of adventure activities are fantastic. You will find yourself more focused in your work, you will have more energy than before and you will also be cheerful throughout. The positivism that comes into you after a challenging adventure holiday helps in doing a lot of constructive work.
Indulge mindfully
You took a long deserved break from work. And now you are in a fantastic place which has some of the best cuisines to offer. Without realizing you go overboard and overeat and continue harming your body. This is unfair. As much as the mind needs to unwind, the body needs a break too.
So while vacationing can be about sight seeing and shopping it can also be the perfect time for you to spend time making healthy changes in your eating habits. Start with a heavy breakfast and as the day proceeds take in ‘healthy-snack’ breaks, practice not to miss the three important meals of the day. Take small quantities of food and take a bit of everything in your plate. Goes without saying drink lots of water and eat lots of greens.
